    Template and Macromedia Dreamweaver

    Hello to you,

I know that having a website is the way to go and I got my nice template and macromedia but I do NOT know what to do next. I've spent hours on it and it seems so complicated so i wanted to ask you guys how YOU started with website, where you learned and how if u took a class or hire someone and how much it is to hire someone. Alos if Im going to be making changes in the future I'd like to be able to do it myself. Is there something easier than macromedia? I'm excited to build the site I just need to find a way HOW to do it lol. Thanks

    - Luke

I use Office Live to create and maintain my website.  It's very easy with a simple user interface.

I like your website. I want to do one too, but I have no idea where to start either. Plus, how do you make housecleaning should exciting? I started doing one on a free website, but it was so boring that I refuse to give anyone the address, plus I forgot where it was. Do you have to pay a monthly charge for having your wesite out there?

    Greg,

How much do you charge? and where/how did you learn to build websites. I'd like to learn so I can do it on my own. I also want to build a website for my personal use (my journal, pictures, writing and other stuff) so I NEED and MUST to learn somehow lol.

     Thank you for any advice.

    Re: Template and Macromedia Dreamweaver

     Hey Luke,

I am self taught from many many years ago.  Back when the only way to create web sites was a basic text editor and a lot of trial and error.  I was one of the early members of the W3 guild that sets the standards for html coding.  I now use Dreamweaver and have for many years.  Again, totally self taught.   There are TONS of lessons and help sites available on the web. But it does take time.

As far as what I charge..it would depend on what you are looking for.  You can contact me directly and we can figure out what you are wanting and a cost.  It depends on many factors..   Do you have the graphics, do I design them, do you have a layout already, you want one from me, how many pages, do you want hosting as well (I can do hosting), do you want to maintain it, do you want me to maintain it, etc...  All stuff we can talk about if you desire....

If I host it and do the maintenance, I give a nice discount on the design work.

Let me know if you are interested....  I am always around.

    Hi Pat,

I pay a nominal fee for my site.  I do the maintenance so I don't have the added cost of having a designer do it for me.  Some can do a good job and others are ...well...not worth a penny in the long run.  I had a web designer for an online store I had a long time ago stiff me for thousands of dollars.  I ended up doing it myself and learning from scratch when that happened because I had no other choice.  Then I realized I had a knack for it (in my mind) and could put out a decent product on my own.

Housecleaning IS exciting.  You have to explain the benefits to your target audience on your site.  Get them excited by explaining how THEY can benefit from YOUR services.  Keep it simple...that's my only suggestion.  You want to make sure you have no typos and keep it pleasing to the eye.  Too many colors, moving graphics, broken links, etc. are not good.

Start with a template program if you can't afford a designer.  Like I said, MS Office Live has a great program for beginners.  Read the "how-to's" and play with it.  If you mess up, no big deal...just learn how to fix it.  Pretty soon you will have enough mistakes along the way to have taught yourself all you need to know.  LOL
